CHASSIS OVERHAULING Now that you’ve completed your inventory and check list/want lists, we might as well get going and begin our Ducati racing project. I thought we’d begin with the frame, as it is normally my starting point. I’ve made my checklist below, and details as to what should be done to each particular item. I suggest you review (and use) this list, as it is here for your benefit. A) Sandblast frame & swingarm. B) Inspect for cracks; repair as required. C) Check frame alignment; repair as required. D) Fit rear engine mount gussets; E) Drill holes to 3/8" at rear only x4 (using a long 3/8” bit so holes line up). F) Drill & Tap frame at back side of swingarm pivot center; 3/8"x 18 for set-screw x2. (to lock S/A pin). G) Shock mounts; Diameter & Threads okay? H) Swingarm Grease fittings: After re-locating the RH hole to straight ahead, Drill & tap 6mmx1.0 for fittings. I) Swingarm: Bushing & Pin condition? R&R s/a bushes & size for new pin. Check pin fitment in frame. J) Steering head bearing cups: Check fitment into frame. Re-chrome bearing cups? Bearing tracks okay?. K) Make sure bodywork fits; Tabs/mounts? Seat in correct location? Tank fit between seat and headstock? L) Make/fit rear number plate tabs & Seat mounting tabs, x2 each. M) Foot rest location? Use original rear most peg mounts, chase threads with tap; Make/fit brake pedal stop. N) Lighten frame by removing all unwanted brackets/tabs; Drill holes at front support and under R-engine mount. O) Final cleaning; Paint* frame & swingarm. *Note-O: We do not powercoat frames, but paint them instead with Flecto plastic paint, which when done right looks great, and sometimes is mistaken for powdercoating. Ever try welding a powered coated frame on race day? Lots of grinding, then try touching it up. P) Order Shocks (see “Suspension” for ordering information). Q) Overhaul/blast/paint/fit Triple clamps (polish top clamp or bead blast & paint). R) Overhaul front forks and fit (see “Suspension” for overhauling information). CHASSIS NOTES The Frame, Swing-arm and Triple-Clamps, need periodical checking and maintenance. Due to the stresses of racing (and modern tires), it is most important that you check for cracks in the frame, the upper-rear engine mount being the most likely to break. The swing-arm pin & bushings should be kept clean and lubed for trouble free performance, being greased after washing, rain racing and during maintenance. As for the triple-clamps and bearings, we suggest yearly cleaning and greasing. Our machines under go a full ground-up rebuild every two seasons, thus keeping them 100% race ready. |
