INVENTORY - WANT LIST - CHECK LIST

Using the extreme case, let us assume your dealing with a basket-case machine, one that is undoubtedly missing god-knows-what, and is lumped into two or three torn up old cardboard boxes. A complete inventory should be your first order of business.  Begin with sorting out what you do have, then we’ll continue with a Want List and a Check List for your racing project.
Using your parts book and other reference material, use part numbers and descriptions, you can create a “want list”, while your “check list” should contain notes pertaining to what you plan to do. You'll be surprised how much easier it is once this has been completed and the project inventoried. I have included two examples, one being a “want list”, the other a “check list”. On the “check list” you should also include modifications you wish to perform on your machine.  As you progress, don’t forget to keep track of what you’ve done in your “log book”, including parts purchased, and details such as paint colors, measurements, etc.

1) Inventory: Sort out the basket-o-bits across the floor, separating particular items such as:
Engine and related;  Frame, swingarm, forks; Wheel assemblies; Controls; and Body work.
2) It’s time to get dirty; everything must be cleaned and inspected... period.
Sure, some items will no doubt be only suitable for the trash can, but wait, don’t pitch it just yet, you may have trouble finding a replacement part.  The seat, fuel tank, old unrepairable fenders, rusted steel rims, rotten mufflers, etc., are good candidates for the trash can though.
3) What is missing?  What will you need?  Have you figured this out yet?   Review your parts & reference material.
4) Make a “want list”, including a separate page for each of the following categories: Example below:
