ENGINE SERVICE 8) Motor Oil. A) Place machine on cycle stand. B) Place suitable drain pan under engine. C) Cut-off and remove all safety wire at drain/filler plugs. D) Remove drain plug/filter screen tube, located at left. E) Lean machine to left to get all oil out. F) Clean drain/filter screen in solvent and blow dry. G) Refit drain/filter and tighten. H) Remove filler cap and insert funnel. I) Fill with 2-Qt's (US)... (2.5-quarts in Widecase machines). J) Remove funnel, and Refit filler plug. K) Safety Wire drain & filler plugs. 9) Tune-Up. A) Place machine on cycle stand. B) Remove spark plug. C) Remove points cover. D) Select 5th-gear, rotate engine to "TDC" Compression stroke. E) With points on high part of points-cam, adjust gap. Points gap w/Battery Ign .015", w/ET Ign .010"-.014" F) Lube points cam lube-pad w/oil. G) Refit points cover. H) Gap spark plug at .025", lightly grease threads, refit plug. NOTE: To correctly set Ign Timing, you'll need the use of a Degree-Wheel, and Index Pointer (which are not supplied). 10) Ignition Timing. A) Complete #9A-F. B) Remove clutch adjust cover from primary cover. C) Fit degree-wheel/adapter plate into clutch cover screw holes. D) Remove crank access plug from primary cover. E) Insert index-pointer tool into crankshaft, lightly tighten. F) From "TDC" rotate engine backwards approx 75-degrees. G) With the use of a test-light, one end grounded, the other attached to points feed wire ..... H) Slowly rotate engine forward until light comes on, check location of Index tool needle. As the points just break (open) is where your timing is set. NOTE: The above is for machines fitted with a Fixed Points Cam. For machines with Auto-Advance units, you’ll have to remove the points cam hold-down screw, fit a large lock washer as to jam the cam in a Full-Advanced position in order to get the timing correct. I) Repeat "F" thru "H" to double check it's correct. J) To adjust timing, undo points plate screws, rotate counterclockwise to Advance; clockwise to Retard. K) Remove tools and refit covers as needed. L) Refit spark plug. |
