1990 North-West Triple Crown 350GP Championship - 2nd

Well, where to start...  In 1990 WCBR dragged all of the bikes to Sears Point for some pre-Daytona testing, and by the end of the day we were happy with what we had.
At
Daytona... we hoped for a good result in the 350GP race. Mike Green was at the controls and would start from the front row against Roper and Craig McLean. When the flag dropped it was Green away first, with Roper and Craig in tow. The trio went lap after lap in single file, now one able to put a wheel on another, that is until on the last lap, and with two corners to go (we're on the short course remember), Green missed a shift, and that was all it took for Dave and Craig to motor past. Mike finish third.  In 500 Sportsman action our Mr Green was again first away and looked as though he would repeat his '89 showing when he lapped most of the field. Sadly a nasty misfire appeared, which slowed the bike enough to allow a 450 Honda to catch and pass him, thus MG was 2nd (and DNS the Premier race due to piston damage).
Saettle, Washington was a fun weekend, though we didn't like the motocross format at all... this was a roadrace! At any rate, WCBR scored two holeshots and two wins on the 350 that day.  This was Round-1 of the North-West Triple Crown Series.
Westwood, B.C.;  This was our second outing on the fantastic British Columbia course, having been there in '89. At any rate, in B.C. they race like in the UK, meaning they time each bike every lap. On Sunday there was to be a Handicap race, so we had to be careful on Saturday not to show our hand. With that knowledge in mind, the 350GP race lept from the grid, with Green leading.   After a few laps Craig McLean came alongside Green and waved at him to slow down! The duo did just that... thus letting the rest of the field stay in contact with the leaders. Remember we're racing on UK rules? That means NO white flag like in the USA, it also means Green wasn't paying attention to the laps and Craig outdragged Green across the line for the win.  Opps!  The normal rules do not allow class bumping, meaning we couldn't race the 350 in with the 500s... but, we asked anyway, and was given permission to "participate", but no trophies. We were told, "you have to start at the back of the grid, which is 60 bikes", Green asked, "anywhere at the back?", and was told, "yes." With that said we headed for the grid and warm-up lap...  at Westwood the straight isn't level (up hill over a crest), and the grid is bias to the left, thus leaving a huge amount of room on the right. As the riders formed up on the grid, we saw a number of other California 350s gridding up on the last row on the left side....  odd. Green was last to grid, two rows further back of the main grid, and as far to the right as legal.... see where I'm going here? Having to standup to see the flagman, Green made a great start!, shotting down the right side the WCBR-Ducati was in 6th place by turn-2!  As the race wore on Green battled with a number of Manx Norton's, only to have them pass him on the back straight... in the twisty bits the Duc would regain lost ground and slowly edge forward. With two laps to go the 350 was in 2nd place and closing on the leading Triumph.... Green was counting laps now. Twice the 350 passed the leader, only to be re-passed on the staright. As the leaders climbed the hill for the final time the 350 made another charge on the leading Triumph... only had the finish line been 10-feet further out Green would have won.
Steamboat Springs, Colorado; For reasons unknown, the 500-Sportsman race was run before 350GP. Once again Green was first away and left the field behind as he motored off to another Steamboat win. Sadly, in 350GP action the Duc holed a piston. (thus Green used the 250 in the 500 Premier race).  A DNF in the 350GP saw Green lose he points lead in the North-West Triple Crown Series.
